Refusing all inwardness and consolation, David Webster faces down spirituality's guile in favour of a bleak atheism's hints of a worthwhile life. Bracing, timely stuff! (Peter Manley Scott, University of Manchester, UK) Annoyed by the phrase 'I am not religious, but I'm very spiritual', Dr. David Webster successfully maps out the problems and contradictions it leads to. This is as close to a 'must read' as it gets, for the religious as well as the spiritual reader, as well as for atheists. (Dr. Mikael Askander, Department of Arts and Cultural Sciences, Lund University, Sweden) Should be placed gently but firmly in the hands of any budding convert who thinks that the vacuous claims of a new spirituality are any better than the lies, evasions and hypocrisies of orthodox religion. Great ideas, poorly/barely edited

Webster's commentary on contemporary "mind-body-spirit" phenomenology is really good. He's clearly riled up about the proliferation of flaky ideas that lead to intellectual myopia, and his enthusiasm propels this book forward with great momentum.

Here's the problem.

Webster's writing style is idiosyncratic: filled with fragments and comma splices and ungrammatical punctuation. This would be fine if the text were competently edited, but it isn't, and these regular "Wait, what?" moments totally broke up the flow of the text. There are dozens of misspelled or swapped words that are really distracting. This book was not proofread, or even READ, it seems, one complete time by the publisher. For a 90-page book (10+ of them endnotes) filled with errors, $15-plus-shipping is a steep price!

A manifesto for clear thinking and an engaged life

This is a short book; at around 75 pages, its more of a manifesto. The topic is 'spirituality', narrowed to its dangerous form: a mix of consumerism, feel-good platitudes, and disengagement from the real world. Despite its brevity, the book does a good job of dissecting the murky world of Mind Body Spirit-uality. Drawing on key thinkers from the last 100 years or so, Webster implores the reader to reengage with the world, either through a religious tradition that challenges us to be better people, or simply through social and political awareness and engagement. It's a great read and well worth the price (especially if you get it on sale at under $10). Give it to your 'spiritual but not religious' friends. They'll thank you for it.

A Big Disappointment

I have read many of Ms. Wodiwiss' works but this book seems completely out of character compared to the others. There is little to no character development for any of the major characters, while the most interesting person in the boom (Marelda Rousse) was given more attention in the beginning and then she is dropped like a hot potato. I ended up baffled and annoyed with the story line. I kept reading hoping it would get good. It didn't. And the ending felt like it was written by a first time novelist - everything tied up neatly while the villan helpfully spent the final pages doing a play by play soliloquy. I half expected Malcolm to say "And I would have gotten away with it, if if wasn't for you nosy kids!" Yeah, definitely not one of Kathleen Wodiwiss' best efforts.

Please read Shanna, A Rose In Winter, or The Wolf and the Dove first. In fact, just skip Come Love a Stranger completely.

Entertaining Amnesia Plot, but slightly flawed 3.5 stars

Newly wed Ashton Wingate and his wife Lierin are set upon by river pirates and Lierin is swept off the boat into the river and presumed drowned. Three years later Ashton's carriage collides with a woman on horseback and he is shocked to see that it is his "dead" wife, who recalls nothing of her past, including her husband. But is she really Lierin or her twin sister Lenore? Thus begins KEW's entertaining take on your basic amnesia plot.

Woodiwiss does a nice job with the romance of Ashton and Lierin, plenty of mystery, suspense and evil villains -- albeit the villains were just a tad bit over the top for me. I give Ashton extra points in the hero category, despite his strong desire for Lierin, he gave her space to make her own decisions while she sorted out her lost memory of their past together. I have to admit about 2/3 of the way through the book I was onto at least a part of the big surprise, but there was more to it than I had guessed. My major quibble is the very abrupt ending to the book; I would very much have appreciated an epilogue to round the end out. All in all, a pleasant romance and while it's not a great novel it's still a worthwhile way to spend a rainy afternoon. 3.5 stars

You really can't beat a Kathleen Woodiwiss novel. All of her books are instant page turners...there is no hesitation about getting into the book. I have read and re-read all of her books and continue to enjoy them with every reading! I would definitely recommend this book!

A great story for all people who want to achieve 'personal everest'

This book is not a typical traveller book and is not only about journeys through high mountains. Beside technical side of preparation to climbing and how to survive in death zone and how to deal with illnesses, sickens and troubles in trainings, this book presents also point of view on family and mates and partners in comparison of our life choice. This book also showing very detailed life on Himalayas and Antarctica, in this areas climbers have a lots of funny and silly situations which makes smile on my face, but more often shows dangerous and glory of mountains and this how fragile is human life. Really good book not only for climbers but for people who want to take more from life.

I loved the book!!
It is well-written, easy to read. With almost every chapter, Ania made me cry. The development and changes of each trip are great. If that is all she had written, the book is worth buying. Overlaying her personal development and changes because of these challenges, more than doubles its value.
Typically one-time heroics or tragedies tell us little about the person or the event because the circumstances seem to coincidentally and inseparably merge the two. We wonder whether the heroism or tragic flaw would exist without the event. Is the person really heroic or tragic? How has each changed because of their interaction?
In Why the Hell Bother? Ania has created independent, detailed pictures of the person (herself) and the event (climbing the seven summits). We learn that each is impressive in their own right. But the compelling story is also the integration of these two as a struggle between an unrelenting will and an unforgiving force. We no longer wonder about the effect the summits had on Ania. The mystery is what affect Ania has had on the summits.
Her accounting has reminded me to return to my own writing and re-experience my struggles with events that helped form me at various passages in my life--and, to accept more challenges to change, to grow more.

A pure oxygen bubble

I read the book once and then twice. What a story. It made me travel from the Artic Circle to Antartica in some countries I don't know. It taught me what a safety carabiner is and what means a wuss in English - I'm French -. But above all, it was an invitation to follow in the footsteps of a woman too alive, too happy, too funny, too active, too accepting, too busy, too crazy and that is just the half of the story.

And this story is truly extreme. All is beyond imagination : the military discipline during preparation, the physicall price to pay in so terrible conditions and Ania's consciousness of how feels, how reacts, each part of her body, each part of her soul, each part of her surrounding. It is quasi mystical and beyond human limits... but she did it. Great! We have now some ideas of what a dramatic experience can mean in her mouth.

The favorite part of my reading is Mount McKinley with the basic precepts of the one-foot-in-front-another philosophy. So, thanks Ania for this pure oxygen bubble : it shines on my life even if it questions me on my own achievements.

My teenage son was looking for a book to read about middle school age kids as that is what he is. He finished reading in no time and absolutely loved it. I think its great when a book can catch a teens attention and then have them talking about how much they liked it after!!

In these openings many questions arise about joseki in relation to the surrounding positions. In other words, joseki cannot be confined to just one corner or just one side; the whole board must be taken into account. This book analyzes the role of the 3-3 point in opening strategy and features examples taken from about 100 of Cho Chikun's games. The opening is the most enjoyable part of the game to study. It is also the most intuitive part of the game, and its concepts are the easiest to grasp. Any reader who knows the rules should make effortless progress by reading this book.

About the Author
Cho Chikun was born in Seoul, Korea on June 20, 1956. He is considered one of the great prodigies in the history of go. At the age of six he came to Japan to become a disciple of Kitani Minoru 9-dan. In 1968 at the age of 11 he entered the professional ranks as a 1-dan, the youngest ever to achieve that rank, and it took him only another 12 years to attain the top rank of 9-dan. His first big tournament success came in 1975 when he won the 12th Professional Top Ten title. In 1980 he took the Meijin title and this was followed by a rapid succession of big-title victories: the Honinbo title in 1981, the Judan title in 1982 and the most prestigious title, Kisei, in 1983. When he captured the Kisei title, he held the top four titles at the same time, a feat no one else has ever accomplished. At one time or another he has held every one of the seven major titles, the Grand Slam of professional go. Although he is a Korean citizen, he lives in Japan and is a member of the Japan Go Association. Among his hobbies are golf and swimming.

I have had this book for many years and highly recommend it despite being a hyper-aggressive player

Despite many people believing the opening described in this book is very weak and not aggressive, I have had this book for many years and highly recommend it despite being a hyper-aggressive player. I have used some of the openings described in this book for quite some time, and it remains my favorite go book I have ever read. The biggest thing utilizing the knowledge in the book gives you in my opinion is a mentality to scrap whatever points or influence you can find in every fight throughout the game, and it also gives you a good feeling on the importance of sente. I found other players I recommended the book to, after reading it, often had a better idea of when to leave a conflict as well and take sente elsewhere, which is a really powerful thing to improve always.

Thorough, easy to follow, though difficult to master, this book belongs in every serious Go player's library

Go is the supreme board game, and demands a level of understanding and concentration far beyond anything else. Opening strategy is especially important in this game, perhaps even more so than chess, because the fate of the entire game may be decided in the first ten moves. Due to the enormous size of the Go board (361 points on which a stone may be placed), the length of a typical Go game is over 100 moves, much more than chess. If you place your stones poorly at the beginning, it is almost impossible to recover. This is an excellent text on this vital aspect of the game. Thorough, easy to follow, though difficult to master, this book belongs in every serious Go player's library.

I found this book to be very helpful for taking notes but was not good in terms of practice questions. It has a wide variety of colorful illustrations and tables that went along with the readings that helped out a lot, especially if you are a visual learner and helped organize the information in a different way. This book was well organized according to topics and it was easy to find content unlike some books that make you search through the entire book. This book was very easy to read and understand and summed up the material nicely instead of dragging it out. This book also had case studies that went along with each chapter so as you were reading over the material you could also follow along with the case study. This was nice because it provides examples written out how it actually would be in real life and helps you to relate a diagnosis with certain symptoms. Another thing that I really about this book was that it gave examples on good communication versus bad communication. It gave an example situation and then there was an example of a less effective communication conversation and a more effective conversation. This is very helpful because nurses need to always be therapeutic but also need answers from the patient and sometimes you have to get straight to the point. This gives you a good idea of how to effectively communicate with patients and how to go about that. The boxes for nursing care plans for respecting cultural diversity were very nice because as a nurse in the United States we have to be sensitive of other cultures and their common practices and throughout the book. This book gives great examples of specific groups and what their practices are, it is good to be aware of these so you can be sensitive while providing care to your patient. What was disliked about this book was as you are reading it has only a few practice questions per chapter, which I thought could have been more challenging and more N-Clex style. They were not good for practicing for the N-Clex or nursing exams and the right answers were too obvious. Also, the question’s answers did not have very good rationales describing why it was the correct answer. Overall, I would say that this was worth purchasing because of the easy to read and understand, detailed content, and the quantity of information it provides you with.

Much better

Excelsior just updated their textbooks and started using this one in place of the Maternity/Peds book they had before. I was SO happy about this. This book is way better, and I haven't found any grammar or spelling errors yet. (The last book was so full of them that I refused to read it until they updated.) It also has better visual aids inside, and it can be used with The Point, which is one of my favorite things about it.

Long winded author who forgets what she said in the Last Chapter

The book keeps repeating the same information over and over and... You get my point. Some of it is contradictory for example in chapter 12 it lists Colace as a pregnancy Class C drug but in Chapter 13 it says Colace is safe to take with no teratogenic effects throught pregnancy. I thought maybe it was me so I actually looked up both pages and read one with the other and it absolutely cotridicts itself. I believe the authors wrote more words to make themselves appear more scholarly. If they would have put down their pens for a minute the book would be half as thick. If you don't absolutely need it for class, don't buy it!!!!!!

About the Author

Donald Treadwell earned his master’s degree in communication from Cornell University and his PhD in communication and rhetoric from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

�� He developed and taught communication research classes in classroom and online settings as well as teaching courses in organizational communication, public relations and public relations writing.

�� He has published and presented research on organizational image, consumer response to college names, health professionals’ images of AIDS, faculty perceptions of the communication discipline, and employers’ expectations of newly-hired communication graduates. His research appears in Communication Monographs, Journal of Technical Writing and Communication, Public Relations Review, Journal of Human Subjectivity, and Criminal Justice Ethics.
