Gorgeous and inspiring

[[VIDEOID:moAZ8737ZBK4T6]]The Art of Pixar is a gorgeous book that represents the humble beginnings of an animation studio that is now loved by fans worldwide.

The first colorscript was drawn by Ralph Eggleston for Toy Story. That was in 1993 and it had enchanted John Lasseter, Steve Jobs and the rest of the then little studio. Today, many years and films later, it's nice to see that Pixar is still creating them, using them to communicate the emotional arc of their stories.

Collected within the 320 pages of this beautiful book are the colorscripts up to the latest movie Cars 2. Also included are the colorscripts for the many animated shorts that, if I'm not wrong, are all appearing in this book for the first time. The 100 over pages at the back are for selected pieces of art, one printed per page. These are the work from the last 25 years.

It's quite cool to see the artistic styles used by different artists to create the colorscripts. I love the pastel ones by Ralph Eggleston and Dominique R. Louis. The vector style art of Lou Romano for The Incredibles is still a refreshing departure of usual style of drawing them with pastel. Later on, the colorscript slowly evolved to being drawn digitally. The ones by Sharon Calahan for Cars 2 are so detailed I'm not sure if they aren't film stills.

The book claims to have the complete colorscripts but that's not exactly true. Since I have the other Pixar art books published by Chronicle Books, I went back to compare the content. I found out that the book didn't include some of the colorscripts that were featured in the earlier art books. Some from The Art of Finding Nemo weren't included. However, this book includes a lot of new colorscripts that aren't in the earlier books. In particular, there are many more extra pages of colorscripts for Cars and Cars 2. The colorscripts for Ratatouille in this book are not even in The Art of Ratatouille.

As for the selected pieces of art, many are from earlier art books. I guess there some are new pieces but I didn't do a detail comparison. Even if there are some duplication, you'll still want the book because of the colorscripts, all conveniently collected and beautifully laid out.

The Art of Pixar is a tribute to art, animation and the amazing people working at Pixar. It's an inspiring book authored by veteran animation writer Amid Amidi. Highly recommended.

Stunningly beautiful book

If you have the regular 'Art of' books for each film, there is not a lot of new content here. Also there is not much commentary from Pixarians or otherwise. Still, it is just what is says it is, the COMPLETE color scripts... so they're all in there for every film and short, in their entirety, and they're absolutely gorgeous. Also, there is a comprehensive section containing 'world' art, which is basically environmental concept sketches.

Bottom line, if you don't have the full Art Of (film) series, get those first because they cover each film in detail with a lot of great art and first-hand commentary. If you already have all those books (or at least the ones you're interested) and you would like to re-visit all the films and shorts in a new and abstract way then you cannot go wrong with this comprehensive volume.

Disappointed with content

While the book very nicely presented, the content wasn't what I was expecting. 2/3 of the book is color scripts, while nice, I was expecting more in depth art from each film, concept sketches, digital renders etc. Maybe this was too much to cram into this book since they cover 12 films which is a lot of art to put into a book. My fault for not reading the description more carefully. Still, I'll keep it, nice addition to the library.

perfect!

Reading this book lying on my back, luxurious, I just let it do me, and it certainly did! I have spent a lifetime reading books on enlightenment, zen, nonduality, and this one, together with Lott's other book Trying Too Hard stands out as the one that simply provides enlightenment. Lott says that is the whole reason for the book, to bring the reader to the point of full realization of clarity of Being. This he actually does. With no mystification or specialness whatever, he simply points relentlessly, effectively to the way things are. He SHOWS us, patiently, simply, kindly that "There is no separate individual apart from this present happening." About one third of the way through this short book, the author begins to 'walk us through self inquiry' in the most effective way I have ever seen. He says "...rather than just blindly asking yourself "Who am I?" like some sort of mantra, begin to explore what is this that you call yourself?" He then proceeds to unpack the package of experience with great skill and simple guidance. 'Look at this? See? Now this way.
See that?' Proceeding with tender attentiveness to the reader's need to see everything for himself.
He reminds us repeatedly "Do not settle for any answers...no answer could ever capture the aliveness of this" while pointing to the reader's own experience. Lott reminds me of an optometrist fitting you for glasses, if you have ever had that experience. It is as if he goes, 'now look here. is that better than this? Good, now this one? Or this one? Good. Now tell me if you can see this. If not, now look at this. Now this way. OK.' And I can tell you, if you relax and enjoy the process with honest curiosity, you will know directly what the buddhas and bodhisattvas have been pointing to all these centuries. Just like getting new glasses!

I recommend this book to anyone who has suffered separateness enough and is ready to be done with it.

Will wake you up, if you don't fight it!

You can experience this book in an hour, waking up every few seconds by noticing what the author is questioning, pointing toward. Without dogma, it is painless mental surgery conducted with compassionate skill. A valuable book at a bargain price, as are several other delightful books by Mr. Lott which I've read. My disclaimer: waking up may be effortless; staying awake in the bombardment of culture/conditioned reactions is not so easy, may take lots of persistent effort, even when it is glimpsed that there is no 'you' to make (or not make) any effort. : )

Elizabeth David had it easy. All she had to do was eat her way through France and Italy and translate the essence of the encountered cuisines for a ravenous, literate, English-speaking public. Fuschia Dunlop, on the other hand, went to Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan in China, where she ended up the first foreign student enrolled at the Sichuan Institute of Higher Cuisine. That was nearly 10 years ago. After annual return visits and endless research she has produced, in English, a magnificent introduction to the food and foodways of Sichuan. She is in every way the dharma inheritor of Elizabeth David.

You too may start to salivate halfway through the introduction to Dunlop's magnificent Land of Plenty: A Treasury of Authentic Sichuan Cooking. Perhaps it begins when she explains xian, "one of the most beautiful words in the Chinese culinary language." It describes an entire range of flavor and sensation, "the indefinable, delicious taste of fresh meat, poultry, and seafood, the scrumptious flavors of a pure chicken soup..." Before you know it you are running headlong into a world of 23 distinct flavors and 56 cooking methods (they are all listed at the end of the book). Sichuan is the place where "barbarian peppers" met up with a natural cornucopia and a literary cooking tradition stretching back to the fifth century A.D. Englishwoman Fuchsia Dunlop spent several years in Sichuan, studying first at the university, then at Chengdu's prestigious cooking school. Her fascination with the food of China's obsessively gastronomic province has resulted in Land of Plenty, a comprehensive collection of the best Sichuanese recipes. Even those conversant with Chinese ingredients may profit from Dunlop's introductory glossary of Sichuan foodstuffs and kitchen implements. Her recipes cover those delicious dumplings and other snacks often sold from pushcarts on the region's streets. From there she moves forward into main dishes on the order of Sichuan's noted Ma Pou Dou Fu, a spicy melange of bean curd, ground beef, and chilies. She offers several variations of the dry-fried green beans so popular in American Chinese restaurants. The best Sichuan cookbook I've come across

I was very surprised when I found this book in this library, because authentic Chinese cookbooks are difficult enough to find, and anything regional and non-Cantonese even rarer. I myself had never been to Sichuan, though my family did often dined at excellent Sichuan restaurants in Taiwan.

Before I proceed to the recipes, let me state that having read the book several times already (!), this is by far the best regional cookbook on Chinese cooking I've read in English. The author has a talent for combining the precise instruction needed for writing a cookbook and a poetic flair for capturing the local attitude to food. Knowing that most of her audience would likely be unfamiliar with daily life in Sichuan, often a mystery even to outside Chinese, she details the street life there. One of my favorite part is that consequently, her cooking is mostly based on home style and street food rather than haute banquet cuisine (though there are a few recipes of those too). I find this a prudent choice, as banquet food are almost always too elaborate for home cooks, and few things reflect regional cuisine as well as street food.

Most of the recipes are pretty straight forward, and addictively delicious. I've made some from the noodles section are my favorite, as I'm a big fan of snack food. Most of these food do not require more than a good cleaver, wok, and standard kitchen equipment to make. However, the Sichuan peppercorn is an absolute essential. Regarding to another review's warning, I believe the ban on fagara has been lifted, given that the pepper be subjected to high heat before import. Simple googling will turn up the sources.

Another caveat, though it's not the really the author's fault, is that there were surprisingly few vegetable dishes, and even fewer vegetarian. This may be surprisingly given that most of China subside on primarily vegetable-based diets. However, there are actually not that many famous Sichuan vegetarian dishes, probably because they are seen as peasant affair. For vegetarians, I'd recommend borrowing this from the library or friend and copying down the dozen or so relevant recipes (after reading the entire book of course).

Lastly, there are very few sweet dishes. This may bother some people, but sweets really are not part of daily traditional meals anyways, save for the complicated holiday specialities, so in a way I'm glad she left them out.

I really am glad this book come to being. I don't have much actual complaints except that I wish there were more pictures. There are some here but not many, and given the unfamiliarity of most people to these cuisine I think photos would help. But otherwise, a new favorite and a real standout.

Made back the cost of the book in Kung Pao Chicken dinners

There are no steamed dishes but mostly require wok frying so the recipes aren't the healthiest but they are not that oily either (two teaspoons of oil in the wok and one teaspoon of sesame oil in the sauce for the Kung POW!)

The layout of the book is encouraging and I had no problem reaching for it when I am at a loss over what to cook for dinner. Luckily I have chili peppers and sichuan peppercorn in my larder now so I am well-prepared to tackle these recipes which call for simple ingredients but the resulting flavors are complex and addictive. Once that ginger meets the sichuan pepper infused oil, one can taste the deliciousness of the dish by fragrance alone.

Fuchsia's commitment to tradition and authenticity is evident and her instructions are clear and concise. Even more challenging recipes such as tea-smoked duck are remarkably simple if you plan ahead accordingly.

Very in-depth exploration of the Gospel of Peter

In The Cross That Spoke, author John Crossan argues for an interdependent relationship between what he calls the Cross Gospel, the intracanonical gospels, and the extant fragments known as The Gospel of Peter. His assertion is based on a multi-faceted argument: that there was an original form of the Cross Gospel, that material was added to bring it in line with developing church doctrine, and that, eventually, portions of the original text were redacted to create a seamless final product. Crossan briefly describes the two relevant archaeological discoveries that yielded fragments of The Gospel of Peter and summarizes the development of scholarly opinion regarding their dependence, or lack thereof, upon the intracanonical gospels. With this background established, the majority of the book is devoted to proving his core assertions through careful textual analysis of innumerable biblical, apocryphal, and secular sources. Three final chapters discuss the theological ramifications of accepting the Cross Gospel as an original source for the existing Passion and Resurrection narratives.

Isaac's Decision by Ruth Ann Nordin
Nebraska Series Book 9
Two previous books in this series; Eye of the Beholder & His Redeeming Bride lead up to this book. I read them a second time before reading Isaac's Decision and I'm glad I did as the stories flow together so well. This story is about nine years after His Redeeming Bride.

Isaac Larson is the son of Dave and Mary. At age fourteen Dave told Isaac not to talk to "that Craftsman girl" and being the obedient son he is, he obeyed. His eyes did not, everyday in school he still would look at her and admire her. At seventeen, Dave starts encouraging Isaac to marry and Dave already has the bride in mind. Eva Connealy, the school teacher. Isaac wants the only girl he has been forbidden to have, Emily Craftsman.

Emily lives in the shadow of her birth mother, Cassie. She has her beauty but that is all. As a young girl she made the choice not to be like her mother. And yet people seem to judge her by her parents past. She has dreamed of having Isaac as her own for years but when she finds out that he banned from her she almost gives up. Good thing the word quit is not in her vocabulary!

I love this series. It is full of characters with flaws. Neil Craftsman's story is one of redemption but being the town knew of his sins, some people won't let it die even now that he is a new man. Especially Dave Larson. I enjoyed watching the story and characters unfold in this book. Seeing the way they think helps you understand motives, even if they are not right. When you get to know the younger siblings, it is exciting to know that maybe their stories will come about one day as well. In fact, one of the younger sons is in the South Dakota Series, Bride of Second Chances. It's just a small part but Dave and a younger son are in the General Store. I love how Ruth lets her characters pop in other stories now and then.

The Larson's are always great to read about in this historical series. Great to see Isaac grown up and the revisit all the loved characters from Eye of the Beholder and Redeeming love.Of course Dave and Mary would produce such a good son and we could tell that Emily was not going to turn out like her mother in His Redeeming Love. This is a very sweet love story and a wonderful continuation of the Larson's family story. Eye of The Beholder is still my favourite this is a great continuation of it.

I would like to give this 5 stars for the second half....

The first half was terrible, just appeared a jumbled mess, and boring! The second half was like a different story. It was wonderful. But if you can't wait for the second half don't buy the book. Isaac and Emily are young in their last year of school. Isaac has been told by his father to stay away from Emily Craftsman. It took me awhile to realize I had already read the story where Emily's stepmother, Sarah, and Emily's father had met and married. I loved that book. Half way through this story it took off and was it great! I recommend this story!

Against Liminality

This is a strange and challenging book. Don't look to necessarily agree with Horvath, who is quite extreme in her conservatism. Many developments in the complication of how we think--which she discusses under the heading of a liminality that has crept into our lives--that I welcome, she interprets as essentially destructive of civilization. But expect to be provoked to think again about conclusions you've already come to. On balance, that's very high praise for any book.

This is so good! Can you say mildly terrifying? Emma's balance of attraction and reluctance is what makes the story really gripping. And the sex scenes are HOT!!! Love it, love everything about it!

Lost and Confused

I am so disappointed I don't know where to begin. In theory the storyline was good, however it failed to produce. It just didn't seem to flow; I would look up from my page and look back to continue the next paragraph and thought I'd skipped pages. Then the characters actions were completely unrealistic, not even 24 hours after breaking into her apartment they are acting as if they've been together months. Please don't discount Emma Clark based on this book... I have read other books from this author and was completely content.

Hot and terrifying

I was given this bundle by the author in exchange for an honest review.

This is a short story about Kyla. What would you do with a stalker? Would you be afraid? This tells a terrifying story of just that, but it isn't all scary. The sex scenes were hot and exciting. Can't wait to read the next installment as well as other works from this author.
