Fascinating, insightful read that easily explains mystery shopping!!!

What a fascinating read! Ms. Cruse does a great job of providing very clear, detailed steps required to be a mystery shopper. She states up front the importance of writing well and taking good notes so all details are captured. She doesn't gloss over the amount of work required to be successful and even provides her own expectations for prospective mystery shopping opportunities. Highly recommend this book even if you don't want to be a mystery shopper, but were curious how the system works. It's definitely not as easy as one would think, but Ms. Cruse provides detailed checklists to make the process smooth, efficient, and enjoyable.

I have seen the get-rich-quick commercials on TV about secret shopping and felt they were in the “too good to be true” category. Accordingly, I have never been tempted to look into this line of work for additional income. Until now…
The introduction to this book gave me the feeling that I would be getting an honest look into the world of secret shopping. It didn’t disappoint!
It not only lets the reader know how to get started in the “shop”, but lets us know the pitfalls and how long it may take to get into the high-end portion of the business.
This book has allayed my fears of getting into secret shopping. The question is, will I, as a retired person, get into the world of mystery shopping? I don’t know yet, but the insight into the industry as well as the tips, suggestions and lists in this book are well worth the price of admission.
I not only recommend Luxury Mystery Shopping to those who are considering this for additional income, but I also think those who are simply looking for some in-depth analysis into secret shopping will find it fascinating.

The best contemporary book on changing organizational culture

Lots of HR and OD people are raving about Walking the Talk. It's the most detailed, practical and readable book I've come across on how to change organisational culture. It's written by a highly experienced and successful culture change specialist.

There are 16 comprehensive chapters in three sections: preparing for the journey, the culture development plan, and special circumstances (cultures within cultures, M&A, and small and medium businesses). The painstaking explanations about the origins and relationship of values and culture are excellent. And I loved the very detailed coverage of the beliefs, values, symbols and systems of five typical cultures you may wish to aim for: achievement, one-team, customer-centric, people-first and innovative.

It won't matter what industry or country you're in. It will all make sense. There are plenty of suggestions about exactly what you should do. It's all there. And the 25 page case study of Lion Nathan helps (although, curiously, the measurement tools used to track culture and leaders' behaviour, both from Human Synergistics, don't rate a mention.)

Sadly Random House has let this book down. It deserves better. It's as though the dictation of a life's work has been typed but not edited. An editor could cut some of the plugs for the author's consulting firm at the start, fix at least one typo, rewrite the odd illogical sentence, correct the misleading information about survey sample sizes, chop many of the exclamation marks, and add an index as a quality business book of 390 pages needs an index.

Nevertheless, this is an enjoyable read with loads of examples, tables and lists. There are no references, but there is a reading list of 20 excellent suggestions. This is an essential book for anyone in OD or HR, and strongly recommended to anyone who wants a solid grounding in organisational culture and what it takes to change it.

One of several great challenges that many organizations now face is building and then sustaining what Carolyn Taylor describes as a "culture for success." To do so, they must make a commitment to change initiatives that inevitably encounter barriers, many of them cultural and the result of what James O'Toole, in Leading Change, so aptly characterizes as "the ideology of comfort and the tyranny of custom." I agree with Taylor that anyone at any level and in any area of the given enterprise can influence culture, perhaps help to change it but ultimate success depends upon a sufficient number of people who are not just involved but fully engaged in achieving the desired results.

The most recent research conducted by the Gallup Organization indicates that that 29% of the U.S. workforce is engaged and 55% is not engaged. What about the other 16%? They "actively disengaged" in that they are doing whatever they can to undermine their employer's efforts to succeed. These are stunning statistics. How to explain them? Reasons vary from one organization to the next. However, most experts agree that no more than 5% of any given workforce consists of "bad apples," trouble-makers, chronic complainers, subversives, etc. How to get as many as possible among the other 95% to become positively engaged? This is one of the questions to which Walker responds in her book.

Here is a composite of brief excerpts that explain her purposes: "The is a `how to' book. It will take you step-by-step from the decision to take on culture as a strategic imperative, to how the process should unfold over a three to five year period, and what should be included in each phase. It will show you how to tackle the most challenging aspects: How to change yourself and how to change other people...In doing so, it creates a blueprint...[Moreover, this book] will enable you to review what you have achieved, map out your next step, and identify factors along the way, which may be contributing to difficulties you are having achieving the traction you seek...[In fact,] this book will provide a whole range of steps you could take, a map of a typical journey, so that you are making choices within a logical framework."

This book is not for all organizations and those within them who are charged with designing and then launching change initiatives. Hence the importance of checking out reviews of this book and other works that are most often recommended. That said, some readers will find that Carolyn Taylor offers the information and counsel needed to build a "culture for success." Presumably she would be the first to agree that it would be a fool's errand to attempt to apply all of the material in her book. Rather, it remains for each reader to select only what is most relevant to her or his own organization's needs, interests, objectives, and resources.

Meanwhile, I presume to suggest that leadership of any initiatives must be distributed among everyone involved at each level and in every area of the given enterprise. Whether or not the change initiatives succeed will probably depend upon the extent to which "culture" and "character" are synonymous. Methodologies and technologies are needed to facilitate change initiatives but they must be guided and informed by shared values.

Save your money. You're better off reading free McKinsey articles or even a blog post from Inc. I stopped reading after two chapters. It's dated and not applicable. Very superficial read.

Stephen Witmer�(PhD, University of Cambridge) is the pastor of Pepperell Christian Fellowship in Pepperell, Massachusetts, and adjunct professor of New Testament at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. He is the author of�Eternity Changes Everything: How to Live Now in the Light of Your Future.

J. I. Packer (DPhil, Oxford University) serves as the Board of Governors’ Professor of Theology at Regent College. He is the author of numerous books, including the classic best-seller Knowing God. Packer served as general editor for the English Standard Version Bible and as theological editor for the ESV Study Bible.

Dane C. Ortlund (PhD, Wheaton College) is executive vice president of Bible publishing and Bible publisher at Crossway. He serves as an editor for the Knowing the Bible series and the Short Studies in Biblical Theology series, and is the author of several books, including Edwards on the Christian Life. He lives with his wife, Stacey, and their four kids in Wheaton, Illinois.

Dr. Dennis earned his BS in business from Northern Illinois University, an MDiv from McCormick Theological Seminary, and a PhD in religion from Northwestern University. Loved it

Very good read. I couldn't put it down - well, not quite. But it builds the suspense nicely. And has a "retro" feel to it (One of the heroes drives a Rover 2000). Made me track down the movie and watch it. Then I went back and read the book again - and I virtually never do that.

About the Author
Wayne R. Archer is the William D. Hussey Professor at the Warrington College of Business, University of Florida. He is Executive Director of the Bergstrom Center for Real Estate Studies. He received a Masters in economics from Wichita State University (1968) and a Ph.D. in economics from Indiana University (1974). He has been a faculty member at the University of Florida since 1971. From 1979 through 1981, he served as a visiting researcher at the Federal Home Loan Bank Board and Federal Savings and Loan Insurance Corporation. His research publications include articles on office markets, house price indices, mortgage prepayment, mortgage pricing, and mortgage default risk. Professor Archer is a member of the American Real Estate and Urban Economics Association, where he has served on the board of directors, and also is a member of the American Real Estate Society. He served on the editorial board of Real Estate Economics. He is a Fellow of the Homer Hoyt Institute. Professor Archer has worked in industry education throughout his academic career, including service as the educational consultant to the Florida Real Estate Commission from 1985 to 1999. Among additional roles, he served as a regular faculty member in programs of the Mortgage Bankers Association of America, in the Institute of Financial Education affiliated with the U.S. League of Savings and Loan Associations, and, more recently, with Freddie Mac. In addition, he has provided consulting services to industry and government from time to time throughout his career. David C. Ling (Ph.D, 1984, and MBA, 1977, The Ohio State University) is the William D. Hussey Professor of Real Estate and the Director of the Real Estate Research Center in the Warrington College of Business Adminstration and Graduate School of Business at the University of Florida. Professor Ling serves on numerous editorial boards including the Journal of Housing Economics, Real Estate Economics, The Journal of Real Estate Research, and Real Estate Finance. He has provided research and consulting services to several state and national organizations including the Federal National Mortgage Association, the National Association of Home Builders, the National Association of Realtors, and the Florida Association of Realtors. He is a Fellow of the Homer Hoyt Institute and board member of the Real Estate Research Institute.

Explains well

I needed this book for my real estate class at UW-Madison. It was very helpful in explaining concepts that I didn't understand in class and steps in calculations. I did significantly better on my exams when I studied with the book versus just studying with class notes.

Great book, well written and very easy to understand

Great book, well written and very easy to understand. I could not put the book down, it just flowed so well. A lot of useful websites it mentions. Will become part of my library. It really gave me a solid understanding of the fundamentals of Real Estate Investing.

New vegan with a lot of kids!

I'm reviewing this from the standpoint of being vegan for only 4 months. My twin sister got cancer at age 39 and tested positive for lynch syndrome which means she genetically has a higher risk of certain cancers than the general population. My children and I run the same risk and all the cancer diet research leads me to a low-fat vegan diet. I'm also reviewing this from the perspective of a mom who cooks for a husband, a mother-in-law, and 7 kids (ages 18-6 months) everyday. I've spent hours and hours pouring over recipes for my new menu. If I was going to change everything I fed my family, my new Vegan recipes had to trump my old traditional American family favorites. They have!!! However we also teach our kids that every meal does NOT have to be a symphony in their mouth.
I really love that there are no added oils in these recipes. From cooking them I've learned I can successfully omit all the oils from other recipes or make substitutions without losing anything but unwanted fat. I learned from this cookbook that ground flax seeds and water make an excellent egg substitute. I even used it to coat and batter tofu fishsticks from a recipe in The Vegan Lunchbox. I love that these recipes use minimal amounts of sweeteners but they're still delicious. I personally think every recipe in the book is top notch and I would eat them, as I've made a lot of them. However I will only cook foods that win in our family by a majority vote. Here are the recipes that are kid tested and family approved. Pecan Ball Subs (pg 150) is the top pick. Other winners are: Favorite French Toast (add 1/2 cup whole grain flour to the batter to make a fancy battered French toast), Fruit Crepes (or creeps as my kids call them), pumpkin pancakes, Panana Cakes (big hit), scrambled Tofu, Fiesta Cornbread, No-bake Peanut Butter Bars (my 6 yr old cried when they were all gone and begged everyday for more). Now these other recipes are not a big hit with the kids, but I make them because the adults like them so well: Garlic Greenbeans and Mushrooms (fancy and delicious), Thai Wraps (I could eat them everyday) Pumpkin Gnocchi with Italian Vegetable Sauce (my husband said it's the bomb). This recipe book has been the standard by which I judge, choose, or modify other recipes. Other helpful books I recommend: Eat To Live, The Starch Solution, Disease-proof Your Child, Engine 2 Diet, My Beef With Meat, Fart Free Vegan, The China Study, any book by Dr Neal Barnard ( I loved Breaking The Food Seduction and The 21 Day Kickstart Program).
Without trying to lose weight per se, I've lost 15 lbs, my husband 13 lbs, 18 yr old son 10 lbs, 17 yr old daughter 5 lbs, Mother-in-law 12 lbs.

As an avid follower of the plant based way of eating and a believer in Colin Campbell's findings,I eagerly awaited the arrival of this cookbook..Imagine my surprise when it turned out to be the" Whole Plants Cookbook",by the same Leanne Campbell Disla-just with a different title, and photos added.Even the introduction is the same Had I known this ,I would not have ordered it,since I already have"Whole Plants Cookbook

"SIMPLE, DELICIOUS RECIPES, WITHOUT THE FAT!"

Leanne Campbell, daughter of 'The China Study' author, delivers an intriguing cookbook, based on the the findings and conclusions of 'The China Study.' There is a huge selection of plant-based recipes that are offered, without added fat, and minimal sugar and salt. The results of research in 'The China study' concluded that a plant-based diet results in better health as it can aid in reducing obesity, and reversing diseases such as diabetes, and heart disease. The findings also conclude that this diet can halt diseases such as cancer. The recipes provided are easy-to-prepare, tasty, and highlight the importance of avoiding additional fat. The recipes include breakfast, lunch, dinner, desserts and more. These quick and easy meals and snacks include helpful tips on substitutions, based on the author's principals and advice for better nutrition, and less weight gain. These favorite recipes from the plant-based movement are specifically prepared as no-oil dishes as another aid in improving health. My daughter's first choice as a peanut butter lover is the no-bake Peanut Butter Bars, and mine is the Home-Fry Hash as breakfast is my favorite meal. Since we both love sweet potatoes, the Sweet Potato Enchiladas is next on the agenda as we keep track of our weight, along with exercise. Each week, we will experiment with a new recipe, and I will give our opinion of the outcome. There is something for everyone in this huge selection of recipes. In addition, I have many friends who are diabetics, interested in sharing these recipes. An update of recipes we made this week: GREEK SALAD WITH NUTS (I used walnuts instead of pine-nuts, very tasty. The PUMPKIN PANCAKES were delicious, and the BLUEBERRY COFFEE CAKE was a big hit. Next on the agenda will be BANANA CRUMB MUFFINS and FAVORITE FRENCH TOAST. We are truly enjoying the Breakfast selection, but there is also much more to satisfy hungry cravings. A recent Update: I made the FETTUCCINI WITH BROCCOLI AND CASHEW SAUCE. A very tasty dish, and cooking time is only 20 minutes. I will be making this again! Also, we made the mouth-watering COCONUT OATMEAL COOKIES, delicious & baking time is only 15 minutes as well as preparation time. This recipe makes 16 cookies, so we stored for several dessert occasions. A better road to good health, and a great gift for family, and friends. Highly recommended!
