Good, but old. Needs to be updated.

Those of us who participate in the CGI programming newsgroups know Thomas' reputation and it's steller. When this book was first released, it was the best book available, and it some ways it still is. But the current edition is showing its age. It doesn't cover many new CGI topics or concepts. I still use this book as a reference now and again, but I wouldn't buy it today.

a little out of date, but pretty good

I'd written many complex CGI scripts using Perl before even buying this book, and the concepts in it are sound and well explained. My purpose for this book was to make the difficult transition from PERL-based CGI programming to C-based CGI, and this book definitely served the purpose well. My only two complaints are: 1) There aren't enough code examples per chapter (remember what I bought the book for), and 2) The material is woefully out of date. Still, I haven't seen anything better at CGI using C out there, and I've been looking for a long time.

An EXCELLENT buy -- you don't have to be a "Pro" to use the programs here -- but you can't be a rookie either... Get it "New" or "Used"--the price difference is insignificant--compared to what's inside the book....I bought this book a few months ago--here on AMAZON--and was delighted to find this book contained entire (web)-C-programs that ACTUALLY WORKED! If your web-server(CGI-scripts) are runnning at a crawl...it's probably because you are running a "convenient-scripting-language" -- instead of a C-program!! This book is NOT long-winded, but very practical. I have seen (repackaged???-or-similar)-versions of this code running on a few of the "higher-profile" web-sites. Over the years, I have acquired a STACK of other C-Programming Books--and I am afraid to buy any more of them--because I am tired of EXPERIMENTING to see which ones are PRACTICAL to READ, and I'm tired of reading GOBS of POINTLESS-and/or-BLOATED text--I am very happy with this book. I am a self-taught (Linux) C Programmer, and the C-and-PERL-programs from this book run well on Linux(kernels 2.2 thru 2.4)... This book is a great start in getting you up and running--but the rest is up to you--since you'll REALLY NEED to UNDERSTAND MODERN WEB SERVERS !!! ...and... ONE LAST NOTE-- this code may be considered "old" (written in 1996?) --it's NOT obsolete--but it still runs perfectly-and-flawlessly "as is" --on a modern-day Apache Web Server(Linux). This code has stood it's test of time. After you use these programs--it may become more obvious as to the "updates-additions-or-deletions" you'll want to make. Be sure to get Boutell's UPDATED CODE (from his web-site).

A Wonderful for a Young Mind

This book is a very simple idea, but so very creative and fun. It's a great outlet for kids to express their creativity—even ones who may be shy about it as it gives enough direction to spark the imagination, but makes many of the projects super interesting, silly, and/or fun. The directions are in a simple in a non-intrusive font—leaving space for the drawings. The paper is nice, smooth, and thick. Every other page is split diagonally (two exercises for two smaller drawings) and the opposing pages are full-sized (for bigger drawings in more detail). This is nice, because a young person can choose to do smaller drawings/sketches if they are in a hurry or take their time on a small masterpiece.

*I* was really tempted to keep it for me (I'm an artist), but I bought it for my homeschooled 3rd grader. The plan was to let her use it as an art journal for school next year, but when she saw it she begged to draw in it and immediately produced 3 enthusiastic unique and cool drawings. I expect 639 more to come quickly. We may not be using it for school next year after all (I can see my kiddo easily filling it up over the summer), but I'm so glad we found it. I will be purchasing other versions soon—including one for me.

In the seventies, Nancy Zieman showed a series on her PBS show. My parents were getting ready to go to Europe on a much hoped for vacation. But, my mom was rather on the large size. She'd gone to several stores looking for outfits that she could wear and feel comfortable in. No luck.
So, she brought out her tapes of Nancy's shows and after viewing them, I was able to alter patterns and construct several outfits and blouses Mom could wear and feel presentable in.
Her outfits were color coordinated of natural fibers, so she could mix and match on her 6 week tour. She got several compliments from other ladies on the tour; she did look good, too.
However, Mom stored her VHS tapes in the attic and they didn't survive the heat. When I was faced with a similar problem...Well, it's been about 40 years since using those techniques and I didn't feel confident enough cutting into cotton, linen and silk before referring to those wonderful techniques.
Well, the book is exactly what is needed.
Now, I'll look good and feel comfortable watching my daughter get married and won't embarrass her on their wedding cruise.

Very useful and kind instruction

This book is starting from how to fit for commercial pattern, and how to solve main wrinkles after basting. What eye opening method is slide and pivoting technique to adjust to your size.
In Japan, usually we cut in half and add/abstract the measurement, but I had been in doubt because it does not fit to change each part of your body such as abstracting your waist while adding your hip. So this book really answered my question.

Also there are not many fitting instruction book nor course are available in Japan. Even at school of fashion does not teach fitting. I admit there are so many people with so many type of bodice, that is why fitting books and course (both on-line and off-line), which is very envying to me!

Only a couple of things I do not like is that there is no page info. Shown as this is e-book.
Like "your size chart on page 123", you cannot tell where to go, and it is hard go back and forth between the chart and where you are reading now.
In the reference page, the pictures are very vague and hard to read.
Some measurements such as 5/8" does not properly shown, but just blank.
I hope these are corrected soon.

Otherwise this is a good book, and I hope many of these kind of books will be translated in Japanese!

ところがさすがアメリカ、国が大きく体型も様々な人がいるせいか、補正以前に市販の型紙をいかに自分サイズに合わせるかのテクニックが広く知られているのだなと思います。
やり方は至極シンプルで、市販の型紙を元に補正したい箇所で増減したい分量を入れていきます。ですがサイズ全体ではなくその部分のみずらしたり回転させるというテクニックを使って変更を入れるのです。

また、自分サイズのボディを安上がりに作る人たちまでいて（ネット動画も見つかります！！！）、感心を通り越して逞しさを感じます。
他にもいかに自分サイズで洋裁を楽しむかという視点の商品やコースが充実していて、かなり羨ましいなぁと思います。英語は決して難しくはなく、電子辞書だと分からない単語もその場で調べられて非常に便利。でも、こういう物の翻訳本が沢山出版されても良いのにな。

As a beginning sewist, I have trouble fitting my patterns so I ordered Fitting Finesse. I didn't think it covered enough material so I ordered Pattern Fitting with Confidence. They are the exact same book! You will learn a lot of information from either book, but Fitting Finesse (while the pictures are outdated) is much cheaper on Amazon.com yet covers the same info.

Very understandable and helpful - the only drawback is the lack of DATA for the MySQL examples. The examples need data to function, but I find it a 'pita' to create data while you are analysing the code.

Good Piano Solos

If you are an early intermediate or better pianist who likes Billy Joel's music this may be a great book for you. It contains complete arrangements of the following songs:
And So It Goes, Baby Grand, Honesty, An Innocent Man, Just The Way You Are, Movin' Out (Anthony's Song), My Life, New York State Of Mind, Piano Man, The River Of Dreams, Shameless, She's Always A Woman, She's Got A Way, This Is The Time, Uptown Girl, We Didn't Start The Fire
The songs are arranged as piano solos with no lyrics. So if you are a singer, get something like "Billy Joel - Greatest Hits Vol. 1 & 2" which has many of the same songs.
This is not a transcription book. The emphasis here is on an acceptable solo piano arrangement. While not copying Joel licks etc. they do approximate his style and spirit for each piece as best can be done while supporting the melody and chords in an intermediate arrangement. They are intermediate, but on the easier side. They sound fine played as is. The ones I've played are in the same key as the recording. So what's nice is they provide a good foundation for further embellishment, arranging and/or improvising or even some play along. It would have been handy if chord symbols were included.
I enjoyed what I've played so far, however, if you are really looking to play like Billy get his "Billy Joel - The Keyboard Book". It has actual transcriptions. "The Keyboard Book" is a great book but harder to play as piano solo, which the book reviewed here does a good job of.
There are 2 versions of this book one for easy piano, one for intermediate. This review is for the intermediate version.

And Mr. Joel writes his own lyrics, making him a true master of the twentieth century.

I was able to learn "Piano Man" in about 2 weeks, most of the other songs are easier to use, but I tell you, "We didn't start the fire" doesn't sound right sans guitar.
If you think Billy's music is pleasing to the ear, you'll entertain yourself for hours learning and performing.

I have read all of Shadonna's books and i love the romance

This book is exactly what i was hoping it would be..I have read all of Shadonna's books and i love the romance. What i find with this author's books is that, it is not your everyday romance novel like all the rest out there. It is so much more. The twists that are created in with romance makes it so much more enjoyable and it really does leave you wanting more! This story of Faith and Brandon was a fantastic read. Love, heart ache, mystery, suspense, romance, sex and twists all in one.. Exactly what i crave when reading a good book!

The Billionaire’s Promise
Wow. I love the Belmont family series so far. And book 2 is magical. I LOVE Brandon and I LOVE Faith’s story of forbidden love. The chemistry between the two really works well in this romance. And the twist at the end really got me. Well done!!! Brandon is a hot shot security mogul and former private detective and Faith is a professional organizer whose love life is a complete mess. Love that line. Who would have ever thought they could get together. Love the stories!

A Modern Cinderella Story

Darien never thought that she would met her prince charming while she was trying to keep her car from the repo man or that the repo man would be her prince charming.

On the surface Darien has it all looks, an education and a glitter filled life. In realilty she has been out of work for a year and can't pay her bills. Oh yeah on top of that she hasn't had a date in a year.

Enter Maxwell Ferguson a self made millionaire who really keeps his finger in all his money making pies. He is the repo man and tried to take Dariens car. She does what she does best to save her ride. She runs her game on him and it works. Not only does she get to keep her car but gets a new job nad a chance to do things right.

The job is in Georgia her home state and where her three older and jealous sisters live. It is also where Max runs his family business and his family lives.

For Darien this is a new beginning and she plans to take full advantage of it the right way.
Max is attracted to Darine but really only had honorable intentions towards her. They have fantastic chemistry together and some steamy love scenes.

I really liked this book and the only thing I didn't like was Max's sister. I may not be from the South but pleezze! Max he was the oldest and if it wasn't for him none of siblings would be sucessful and rich. Doreetha couldn't have been more that 33 or 34 but the way she tried to run Max and everyone else you would think she was the grandmother, aunt or eldest sister by 10 or more years. The scene in the kitchen when Darien made a pie and wanted to help with Sunday dinner was annoying. Also the way the reat of the family always had to add thier two cents was
more story time taken away from Darien and Max.

However, other than annoying family members it was a fun and sexy read.

THIS WAS A FUN READ. THE CHARACTER DARIAN TRULY HAD GAME AND USED IT! I JUST DON'T GET THE WHOLE CRYING DURING SEX THING!? SORRY BUT I DON'T REALLY CARE FOR THE FACT THAT THE CHARACTER HAD SEX SO QUICKLY AND WITH A MAN THAT SHE HAD JUST MET. I KNOW THAT THIS IS JUST A BOOK BUT I'M SURE THAT THERE ARE SOME YOUNG ADULTS READING THIS WHO MAY GET THE WRONG IMPRESSION FROM THIS. I think I'm in love ...

I knew from the moment I read the last line of Leslie Esdaile's short story in SISTAHOOD OF SHOPAHOLICS that she was an author I would be on the look-out for.

SISTER GOT GAME has made its way to my top 10 list of favorite books ever. Hands down, it's one of the realest books I've ever read. In this cache, Esdaile highlights the important factors of what each one of us treasures in ANY relationship - Love, honesty, trust, spirituality and a sense of family. I would best describe it as "chick-lit with heart".

Darien Jackson is the dazzling college educated woman struggling to get by. Though she is smart and talented, Darien uses men to get her closer to her idea of the finer things in life - that is until all of her game playing catches up to her.

When Maxwell Ferguson, the young and remarkably handsome repo man, attempts to take away Darien's stylish sports car, she is at her wits end. She comes up with an outlandish tale of being stalked and how her car is her only means of escape. Captivated by her beauty and his chance to play knight in shining armor, Max offers her a job to pay off her debts. She readily accepts seeing this as her chance to right her wrongs. But, when she reports to work on Monday, she finds out that the sexy tow-man is the successful self-made millionaire CEO of her new company.

From that point on, the two get caught in a whirlwind cluster of serious attraction. They are made for each other and everyone around them sees it. They try and deny the feelings, but it just brings them closer, each of them falling harder for one another. In the end, they give into true love and of course live happily ever after.

Leslie Esdaile is an amazing storyteller. SISTER GOT GAME had me yelling with excitement, crying with emotion and melting with adoration (Maxwell Ferguson's character had me weak in the knees - I think I fell in love!).

The story was beautiful and the characters were so familiar and relative. I will definitely be picking up all of Esdaile's books, and be in search for any new projects!

Gets the Job Done

In reviewing this book, I'm reminded about the famous quote that democracy is the worst form of government except for every other one.

The task of taking a large, complex topic such as critical theory and presenting it in primer fashion makes it inevitable that there will be places where the more knowledgeable or experienced reader feels like the person undertaking that task is being reductive. And it would be easy enough to pick on the book's idiosyncrasies: the psychoanaltyic chapter is too narrowly Freudian, the deconstruction chapter has trouble explaining how the practice (explained fine) developed from the theory, the reader-response chapter neglects later responses to some initial criticisms of the theory.

But these are the sorts of complaints that will be levied by those who aren't the target audience, and to make them is to wish for a book that is both an introduction for undergraduates and a more thorough encyclopedia for scholars. The book isn't trying to be the latter.

As an introductory work, Texts and Contexts is actually pretty good. The prose is clear and avoids overloading students with too much jargon or too many technical terms too quickly. It is also one of the few primers I've run across that tries to address practice rather than just theory--that tries to show what a _______ critic does rather than just what _______ criticism is.

Another plus is that the bibliographies at the end of each chapter, while short, are very serviceable, and provide students with a list of key readings in each area of criticism that can help them get started at being more thorough in the area in which they are most interested in.

If there is one thing I seriously hate about the book it is that it is one of those "designed to be text"books that comes out in a new edition every other year. I've had every edition since the second, and the changes are pretty superficial. (As I right this, it's now in the fifth edition.) Unless absolutely required (say by a professor) to buy the latest edition, readers would be better served to get a used, older edition on Amazon--they are usually less than a quarter of the price of the new edition.

Favorite Intro Lit Textbook

A number of years back, Mortimer Adler, he of the Paedeia Program and the wonderful Great Books Series, probably the last publically successful canonical venture before we starting deconstructing the canon, wrote a bestseller which was at the time regarded as a classic: "How To Read a Book". Lynn has written the book that Adler was trying to write.

After years spent reading and teaching the humanities, I've learned that we don't spend a whole lot of time thinking about how we read. That conclusion, in simple, funky Americanese, is, in as many words, what, I think, Jacques Derrida was trying to say in a lot more. And if words are, in a sense, metaphors, it's that much more imperative that we get a handle on our method of reading, that we become mindful of our processes of comprehension. Teaching mindful comprehension, a method of reading that sticks, is the main task of college level pedagogy in the humanities.

Lynn's book is a masterpiece of organization and concision. He begins by briefly describing the seven + basic approaches to reading which, in contemporary academic parlance, go under the rubric of critical theory, and then proceeds to devote a chapter to each, examining, in simple, clear, and accessible terms and demonstrations, what value the particular approach under discussion has for understanding the text.

Lynn's writing is lucid, accessible, exemplary. His citations are edifying, central. His examples are, well . . . textbook. The book as a whole is remarkably comprehensive in a svelte, easy-to-hand, state-of-the-art format. I challenge Freshman English or Language Arts instructors to find better than what we have here.

A great introductory text for AP English

I use this book to introduce literary theory to my AP high school seniors. The explanations of the theories are accessible, the sample essays provide great models, and the suggested strategies for critical writing effectively allow my students to engage with both work and theory. Impressive... AND the author maintains a sense of humor which adds to the readability. Wow!
