The Didi Man, by Dietmar Hamann

A warm and highly entertaining account of Dietmar Hamman's personal story, The Didi Man was a Sunday Times bestseller on hardback publication.

Dietmar 'Didi' Hamann is a complete one-off. The foreigner with a Scouse accent. The German who now plays cricket for his local village team. The overseas footballer turned anglophile who fell deeply in love with the city of Liverpool, its people and its eponymous football club.

The classy midfielder had a long and distinguished playing career, but it was his seven seasons at Anfield that marked him out forever as a true Liverpool legend. His cult status was secured when he came off the bench at half-time during the 2005 Champions League final in Istanbul to inspire his team to a dramatic come-back and spectacular European glory.

The Didi Man is Hamann's story of his time on Merseyside at a football club which will always have a very special place in his heart.

Review
'In his enthralling book, Hamann offers a matter of fact but powerful snapshot of his life'―Daily Mirror

'The real selling point of this book is Hamann's receptivity to the game and those around him, his cool widsom warmed by a self-deprecating humour and constant desire to better himself'―WSC

Have a laugh with Didi
By Judith
Well this won't go down well in the red half of Manchester as Hamann is clearly in love with all things Scouse, but it is a humorous book - for a start John Bishop's foreword is hilarious. According to JB the only bending Didi did in the pre match warm ups was occasionally to bend down to check his laces were tied properly. As Didi says 'I was not known for tearing about all over the place'. Sports autobiogs - especially football ones - can often turn into a blow by blow account of their most memorable matches (which seems to be most of them) but Didi has an outsider's view of Liverpool and England and this book is much more than that. He is a funny bloke and also honest in his approach - for example in his comparison of the England and Germany's national sides and the reasons why we constantly wobble while the Germans go marching on.

It is interesting to learn more about the managers and players (at Liverpool, Man City and Bayern Munich). At LFC Carra w asthe joker of the pack which I didn't realise. He always looks pretty terrifying on the pitch but apparently a right laugh in the dressing room. And Didi's blow by blow account of the 2005 Istanbul final does bring back the drama of that historic night. Didn't realise he had a broken bone in his foot when he took that first penalty.
Finally I defy anyone not to laugh out loud at the description of Giovanni Trapattoni coaching the Bayern Munich team, with his very limited knowledge of German...

Unbelievable Read
By Crew96
The Didi Man: My Love Affair with Liverpool by Dietmar Hamann is a candid look into the game of English football and more importantly, the greatness of the Liverpool experience.

Hamann is a great storyteller, someone that recalls the greatest moments and players of the Modern Era. It is truly a LFC love affair with an unlikely main character, a German National Teamer that helped bring hardware home to one of England's most storied teams.

You get an insider's look into everything Liverpool from players, managers, coaches, staff, and the city itself. It is an absolute masterpiece, one where you learn something while cracking a smile.

It must have been quite a ride playing with Hamann, who by all accounts is quite a character in his own right. He was a quality footballer that surrounded himself with the stars of the beautiful game. Yes, we are talking about players like Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher and managers like Rafa Benitez and Gerald Houllier.

Hamann is a player that has seen it all: the World Cup, the Champions League, derbies in the EPL, the Euros. You name it and he has been there. He was a fan favorite everywhere he went; his personality was simply contagious.

This book represents the best of biography, sports writing, and comedy. It is nice to see an author that doesn't take himself too seriously, someone willing to have a laugh right there with the reader.

It feels like Hamann actually enjoyed writing this book and actually enjoyed sharing his legendary stories.

It is a no-brainer for any EPL fan and an absolute must-have for any who has fallen in love with Liverpool. There are so many people that fall into the latter category thanks to Liverpool's massive North American tour and the Being: Liverpool series from FOX.

This title is just another piece of the puzzle in a fan's love affair with the Reds.

This German who found a second home in Liverpool writes his story in a fun but real way.. It is a quick one night read but I think it tells his story well.
