About the Author
Thomas and Mariah Roberts have been friends since age twelve. Born and raised in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, the two traveled west after college. Three years in the Sierra Nevada Mountains skiing, hiking, biking, and, notably, cooking and baking prepared them for the next phase of their adventure: their return home to the region they love. In 2001, in a borrowed commercial kitchen, they began baking for local farmers markets. In 2002, they opened the doors of Beach Pea Baking Company, which instantly became a mainstay of the Seacoast. In 2003, they married. Together they live their commitments to health, to community, to sustainability, and, of course, to baking. Brian Smestad was drawn to the art of photography at an early age, and by twenty-two he published his first book. From there he went on to establish his own publishing company, Blue Tree, LLC. The titles he s published exemplify his passion for artistry and his enthusiasm for travel. Smestad works in medium format using a Hasselblad and currently lives in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

Fabulous Fougasse!

We are lucky enough to live near the Beach Pea Baking Company. While everything that we've eaten there has been delicious, their fougasse bread is unbelieveable and I bought the cookbook specifically for that recipe. I spent today making the bread and it turned out beautifully! The instructions were easy to understand and told me everything I needed to know to make great bread despite a lack of experience making yeast breads. I am encouraged and look forward to making more of the recipes in this cookbook! The only downside is that I wish the cookbook had more recipes, but it was worth the price just for the fougasse recipe.

Not For the Inexperienced?

I'm not the most experienced baker nor the most inexperienced. I baked the Lavender Mint Shortbread Cookies today and have to say that cooking from scratch is a real commitment of time and resources and it would have been extremely helpful if the instructions had been more specific especially a definitive test for doneness would have been very nice, i.e. a little browning on the bottom goes a long way to enhance the flavor of the finished cookies.

Great little book

This isn't by all means a comprehensive cookbook, but it has a nice selection of recipes from which you can definitely find something for any meal/occasion. As someone who no longer lives near the Beach Pea Bakery, I really appreciate small bakeries and business that are happy to help out their customers rather than hoard their secret recipes.
