TCM is now researched using scientific methods at institutions such as the Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Beijing, where Chongxi is a pharmacognosist. He has also authored numerous works on herbal medicine. Foster has authored several herb books (and coauthored the Peterson Field Guide to Medicinal Plants , Houghton, 1990). The authors introduce Western readers to a blend of the two systems by describing about 50 plants used in TCM that are also known to Westerners as ornamentals, weeds, or herbs (e.g., day lilies, gardenias, honeysuckle, privet, and forsythia). Dr. Gerald Keller is Emeritus Professor of Business at Wilfrid Laurier University, where he taught statistics, management science, and operations management from 1974 to 2011. He also taught at the University of Toronto, the University of Miami, McMaster University, the University of Windsor, and the Beijing Institute of Science and Technology. In addition to consulting with banks on credit scoring and credit card fraud, Dr. Keller has conducted market surveys for the Canadian government on energy conservation. Scott Thompson began reenacting in 2002 as a German infantryman. He purchased an original 1939 German field kitchen, and became a company cook, or ‘Kuchenbulle.’ He also owns a Flak 38 20mm anti-aircraft gun.

Great color photos of equipment and the re-enactors but nothing on the re-enactment sites or replica equipment construction.

Really great photos of genuine and replica Wehrmacht WW II equipment, ranging from uniforms and canteens to Tiger and Panther tanks. Thee are also photos of the re-enactors in their uniforms and kits marching into simulated attacks or defending trenches and pillboxes. All the photos are in color. The photos were taken at re-enactment sites and rallies. Just based on the photos, I would give the book 4 or 5 stars.

The reason that I only gave it three stars is there is almost no discussion on the re-enactment sites or rallies (or whatever they are called) where these events are held. I would have found it interesting if just a short chapter with a few a pages had been included to discuss that subject. Based on the photo citation credits, apparently most of the re-enactment sites are in the UK and a few in the US.

There are also several references in the text to replica Tiger and Panther tanks and other vehicles that have been constructed by re-enactment enthusiasts. For example, apparently some replica Tiger and Panther tanks have been reconstructed on old Soviet T-55 tank chassis. No information was provided on how these replicas were constructed and there are no behind-the-scenes photos showing the replica construction underway.

The photographs are a good reference source of information about German uniforms and equipment from the Second World War. If the reader didn't know any better, he or she would think that these are actual color pictures from World War II. The vehicles appear to be meticulously restored.

You don't have to be a re-enactor to enjoy this book. The book is filled with a treasure trove of high quality pictures and gives one the feel of being right there. Excellent pics that will have you enjoying every page.

But, because of World Wars I and II, most European kingdoms were replaced by vibrant democracies, and colonial rulers had to leave most of Asia and Africa due to the destruction wrought on their economies during these wars. In order to give birth to a beautiful child, a woman has to go through the pains of labor. Europe had some of its labor pains in the last century, when World Wars I and II were necessary to change the global socio-economic and political environments of those times. Had those wars not occurred, much of Europe might still be ruled by monarchs, and most Asian and African countries might still be awaiting independence from their colonial masters. Islam is the only major religion imposed by government fiat anywhere in the world. Today Islamic civilization is going through what Europe went through between World Wars I and II. At the end of this crisis, the majority of Islamic nations will become secular and democratic, like Turkey: the world seat of the Islamic Caliphate since 1517, Turkey shed its fundamentalist rule in 1923 and has remained free ever since.

An Excellent Study Bible

Although I'm not Catholic, this Catholic translation is my personal favorite translation. Protestant readers should be aware it contains the Apocrypha.

Clear and concise English accurately reflects the original languages. Excellent footnotes help the reader understand references that would otherwise be invisible to modern readers. In an effort to more accurately portray the meaning from the original language, some verses are split between other verses. These are clearly labeled, but some people find this disconcerting. This edition has been out of print for some time. It is hard to find a Jerusalem Bible with the full footnotes, and you want the footnotes. People sometimes portray to The New Jerusalem Bible as a new edition of The Jerusalem Bible, but truly, it is a new translation. My preference is for the older translation.

The Bible was advertised as "used-like new condition", which was entirely accurate.

I believe this may be the best English translation ever written

I believe this may be the best English translation ever written, First translated from the early texts into French, Then translated again directly from the early texts into English, while compared with the French. the result is unique colloquialisms, and phrasing shifts that bring the actual scenes into sudden surprising vividness. VERY well researched. N.T. Wright reviewed a list of 10 or 12 modern English translations and "damning with faint praise" would describe a lot of them. Of this, he said: "One of the best, VERY good overall, in places brilliant, occasionally misleading". I like that, but I'll decide for myself if it's misleading thank you. This standard version supplies a LOT! more cultural background material than the readers edition and is harder to find I LOVE it! Don't mistake it for the NEW Jerusalem Bible, which is timid, bone dry, wordy, (like this review) and boring.

Timeless - Traditional

As one who greatly dislikes the inclusive language of The New Jerusalem Bible, I have been searching for a "Like New" used copy of The Jerusalem Bible (�1966) for quite some time.
I recently found a copy here on Amazon that met my criteria.

In my excitement at the time I placed my order, I clearly hadn't read the description thoroughly, and was under the erroneous impression that I had ordered a standard hardcover/cloth edition.

Upon receiving my package I was utterly delighted to find a beautiful near-perfect, black, flexible leather-bound, Jerusalem Bible with completely clean copy (no notation marks, no highlights, etc.) ...and for just $19.96!!! What a treasure! What a blessing!
The leather binding was a bit dull and slightly dehydrated upon receipt (it IS fifty years old, after all!).
A few applications of a leather conditioning creme was all it took to restore suppleness and a lovely sheen (please see my photo).

The 1966 Standard edition Jerusalem Bible translation is my absolute favorite for its clarity, faithfulness to original sources, use of traditional language, and it's excellent footnotes (see photo), and study resources.
In particular, I very much like the individual book introductions.

The translation itself, for those unfamiliar with The Jerusalem Bible, reads similarly to the Revised Standard Version (RSV-2CE).
It is so much more scholarly in flavor than the "simplistic" New American Bible Revised Edition (NABRE).

So while I own other newer beautiful leather-bound Bibles, this "used", half-century old treasure is now my "go-to" Bible.
I use it for my daily Lectio Divina. It's the one I carry to and from church. And it's the Bible that I use to teach from in my Adult Religiious Education classes and Bible Study groups.

I'm so thankful for this timeless treasure --quietly sitting on a shelf somewhere-- just awaiting my order.
Truly a blessing and one of my most-prized possessions.

A fun book which will help to keep children engaged and enjoying books.

Disclosure: I was sent a copy of 'The Parent Agency'* for review purposes, but the opinions in this post are honest and unbiased.

Barry Bennett hates being called Barry, it's not a cool name for a nearly 10 year old. He also hates his parents always being tired and boring. When he wishes for better parents, he is transported to the United Kid-dom. This is a world where children can choose the parents they want from 'The Parent Agency'. He gets to try out various sets of parents, before deciding the ones he wants to spend the rest of his life with.

OK, so the concept of a child being dissatisfied with their life and being transported to a different life is not exactly original. There have been quite a few films and books which use this as their plotline, for example Big, Vice Versa, Freaky Friday. It's an idea which probably appeals to most children at some point in their lives!

My very-nearly 12 year old son Lyle is fairly reluctant when it comes to reading fiction, but he was pretty keen to get his hands on this book. He's really been enjoying it and told me:

This book is really good fun, I'm enjoying the story and the cartoons in it are great as well. I think it would be great for kids up to my kind of age, and I think some older kids would enjoy it as well. Don't worry, I don't want to pick any new parents!!

I also love Jim Field's illustrations which appear throughout the book. I particularly like the map of 'Youngdon' where Oxford Circus is actually a circus, and Nelson's Column has a statue of Nelson from the Simpsons. The cartoons add to the book without disrupting the flow of the story.

I'm always happy to see books which keep kids interested in reading, especially pre-teen boys who can so easily drift away from reading as a pastime. I was a very keen reader as a child, and as an adult it is one of my favourite ways to relax. In 'The Parent Agency' I think David Baddiel has come up with a book which will help to keep children engaged and enjoying books.

Wish-fulfilment stuff: original ideas that will get 'em reading!

Well done, David! After a slightly wobbly start for me (silly immature jokes and lists), I quickly saw that this was going to turn into an excellent wish-fulfilment adventure for young readers.

Like the 90s films North (Elijah Wood), Barry decides that he has rubbish parents and wishes he had different ones. He hates his name, he hates them being tired and poor, he hates his younger sisters. Now whether or not the following chapters are somehow real or a dream doesn't really matter. It's very funny and that writing is pretty convincing, as the voice of a not-quite-ten-year-old boy.

The world Baddiel sends Barry into is a scream, with every reference a nod to today's kids - Youngdon is populated by kids who can choose their parents, it's a lot of fun seeing Green Bogey Park and spotting famous names turned into slightly different ones.

Barry goes on his journey to find the best family he can, meeting a menagerie of weird and wonderful parents in this bizarre place who manage to take the mickey out of rich people, celebrity couples, hippies and fitness fanatics. Lots for parents to enjoy.

The illustrations are well spaced out, they don't try to make jokes from themselves as Williams often tries, and Baddiel's humour is also a little more subtle than his celebrity contemporary. He also has a handle on moving endings.

So it's a story that I've seen a couple of times before? Never mind, its fresh in its ideas and not something that's been done to death. Barry is a great lead character, flawed but you can sympathise with his 'plight', a James Bond and football fan who's sick of his sisters ganging up on him and wearing cheap trainers. There's also sympathy for his parents and a good few mentions of their feelings.

Yep, liked this one. Thought I'd be putting it to one side during chapter one, but it saved itself in time.

Would be lots of fun for storytime in class or at home, or great for confident readers of 8/9 to 12.

Hope its not a one-off, Baddiel has talent.
