Sports Medicine Advisor: A Must for Nurse Practitioners

I have found Sports Medicine Advisor extremely helpful in my practice as an NP. My peers consult it regularly. It really helps patients understand their injuries and it gives them an important role in their own recovery. They can take some control over their rehabilitation, have a better understanding of what happened to them, and how to prevent recurrence of their injuries.
As an NP educator, I have recommended the book to my students for the past four years in two of my courses. It is on my bibliography and I endorse it wholeheartedly. It is a unique, easily understood text for both the beginner and the more expert.
Students are eager for information around orthopedic and sports injuries and this text provides them with a practical, common sense approach to evaluation and management of orthopedic injuries. Every Office Should Have This Book!

Dr. Rouzier's book is exactly what I had been trying to find. My patients always used to ask, "Can you write that down for me?" after I finished explaining their condition and assigned home exercises. Trying to create my own handouts had been on my "To Do" list for years. I have looked at other products but they were either too expensive (most of which were large computer software programs) and or more than I wanted or needed in my practice. This book is perfect--and Dr. Rouzier has done all the work for you. "The Sports Medicine Patient Advisor" is well written, has an easy-to-use layout, includes great graphics and information, and the best thing--encourages making copies of the handouts to give to your patients. I use it every day in my Chiropractic practice. It also saves me time because I can now briefly review my diagnosis with a patient and then just give them the handout--and the patients love them too. This book will pay for itself with your first patient. It is also a great reference for the non-doctor athlete to have on their own shelf. You will love this book!

Good high level overview, not a lot on actual genes (DNA)

I like the idea of the book. And there is some good stuff in there. BUT, I was hoping for more DNA science. He is against getting your DNA tested, and the promise is that there are self tests you can do to determine what you need in your diet based on your unique genetic code. But there are only a couple self tests. For those of us who already have had our DNA tested, I was hoping there would be some specific genetic information that could be cross-referenced with our results. Especially since there are a lot of examples in the book of how different genes can make a huge difference. One example he gives is of a man who lost a lot of weight and got in great shape on a high protein diet and by training for triathlons, but then starting getting sick, even though he was still sticking to his diet and training, it turned out that based on his genes, he was getting too much iron and it was causing him to get sick, so he needed to cut back on foods high in iron. Great example, but no information on how to tell from a self test or from the DNA results you already have, how to detect if could be an issue for you.

Overall, if you are looking for something that explains really well why there is no "one size fits all" diet, and why some people need carbs while others thrive on low carb, then this is a great book.It makes clear how what works for your sister might fail miserably for you. Of course, the last section of the book is the author's own DNA Restart Diet plan. If you are looking for info on specific genes, that's not really here.

Personalized dietary advice for the masses

The DNA Restart by Sharon Moalem is a good candidate in the expanding library of dietary advice based on determination of individual unique genetic features. Anyone frustrated by the notion that there should only be a single way to eat for optimal health and weight control will find this book useful. Moalem takes advantages of emerging science of genetics that has identified differences in our DNA that predicts different responses to foods and macronutrient composition and then goes on to provide dietary advice based on your unique genetic background.

Also included are various sections offering advice on dietary approaches for reducing chronic inflammation as well as the care and feeding of your microbiome. Of particular interest is the concept of umami, the 5th taste (after salty, sweet, sour, and bitter) described as savory. Maolem ties umami with imparting a sense of fullness and satiety and identifies the chemical ingredients responsible for the taste and offers suggestions on food choices.

Overall, the advice is sound, scientifically credible, and readily approachable. The few self tests described are easy to implement and personalize the text to the individual reader.

Very important book. One of Rodale's best, well researched books written by a credible author, not by an exercise enthusiast or health reporter.

Shares some really new ideas in this book: the type of earwax you have correlates to go well you can metabolize alcohol; consume oils with phytonutrients and avoid allegedly healthy oils like extra light olive oil or refined coconut oil; cardio and resistance exercise reverse aging; eat breakfast not just with high protein bit also with umami; drink brewed oolong tea. Definitely five stars. Very comprehensive book.

About the Author
H. R. Morgan, born in the City of Detroit, Michigan, has been a life long student of radical and mostly extremeist social politics. His birth name was Harry Richard Wyrembelsky which was later legally changed a short time after his birth. After the Detroit race riots of the 1960's his family relocated to northern Michigan eventually settleing in Pinconning, Michigan. When he was done with high school (actually when his high school was done with him) he went to work and also attained his G.E.D. Morgan later went on to attend community college for a couple of years majoring in Elementary Education and English. He later enrolled in Valley Bible Institute the major study being Systematic Theology. He has earned several certificates in such areas as Demonology, Theology of the Sacraments, and Systematic Theology. After three years of study at V.B.I, he was accepted into St. Innocent of America Orthodox Theological Seminary and later in St Gregory of Nyssa Seminary afterward receiving a diploma in Orthodox Theology. In 1996 Morgan moved into St. John the Wonderworker monastery for several months for his 'ortho-praxis' or formal training, at the end of which he was ordained to the Diaconate and raised to the level of Father Deacon. In 1997 he was fully ordained to the Eastern Orthodox Priesthood and a few years later was consecrated a minor Bishop. His apostolic lines of succession run directly back to Primate Aftimios Ofiesh. Morgan currently lives in western Texas at the Holy Family monastery. He is a semi-retired Chorepiscopus (minor Bishop) and spends his time working with the sick and handicapped.

Couldn't put it down

I love real life adventure stories and this one does not disappoint. Though being a sailor is not my thing, John makes you almost want to build your own yacht and head for the seas..except for the seasickness part.
That a young man would have such a burning passion to sail that he would design and build his own boat then take off across the world knowing very little about sailing is quite a tale! There were times I felt like I was there with him. And he's funny, I laughed out loud at many points which is a bit funny in itself when you are on a crowded airplane!
I have ordered his other book The Spirit of Rose -Noelle, cannot wait to read about his 119 day lost at sea ordeal. Too bad it's not on Kindle but it will be worth the wait I'm sure

The Life of the Krays through the eyes of the Krays!

Reg and Ron Kray Our Story as presented by Fred Dinenage (presenter and broadcaster) is almost a “fly on the wall” journey through their violent and somewhat sad and most certainly wasted life. It is a real taste of London of the 60’s and a look into the lives of the crooks and gangsters who made a living by intimidation and murderous intent.

The greatest influence and love of their live was their mum Violet certainly not their dad Charlie who was akin to a James Beck (Dad’s Army) figure...a bit of a spiv and there is a lovely description of Charlie “ducking and diving” in the twins early years....”He was a small, dapper bloke who before the war, had been a pesterer – he’d travel round the better-class areas trying to persuade people to sell him their nicknacks, bits of gold and silver, even clothing, which he would then resell for a profit. He was very good at it. He wasn’t a fighting man, like the rest of the men in the family, but he was a hell of a drinker.

As teenagers all they cared about was boxing and so good were they that opponents stood little chance against them, often receiving publicity in the London papers...”So remorseless was Ron Kray that he sent Goodsell to the canvas no less than five times – the fifth time for keeps”

Ron and Reg saw themselves as a couple of tough lads who could handle themselves if anyone got stroppy or challenged them. This was fine if violence of this nature was controlled and more importantly used in a professional nature such as boxing but the twins loved fighting for fighting’s sake, they would not be told what do or accept any figure of authority.....”then he did a very silly thing-he held on to my arm and tried to stop me leaving. I turned round and smacked him hard on the end of his jaw. Like the young copper, he was in dreamland for a few minutes. And Reg and I were on our way home to Vallance Road for a nice cup of tea with our mother.” I love that final image the boys having a cup of tea with their mum!

For a short time during the 60’s they used the violence, influence, intimidation and most importantly their menacing presence to become the most powerful and feared gang leaders in London. They owned a number of successful clubs such as Esmerelda’s Barn where the rich and famous stars were happy to visit and be seen in the company of the two brothers. Judy Garland, Stubby Kaye, Barbara Windsor, Danny La Rue, Diana Dors, Alan Lake were often to be seen in their company and indeed the twins at one point were attempting to form a link with the Mafia. Unfortunately Ron and Reg began to believe in their own invincibility and should have heeded the words a Mafia boss Angelo Bruno once said to them....never do your own dirty work and never trust too many people.

George Cornell made the mistake of calling Ron Kray a “fat poof” and Ron strolled into The Blind Beggar public house in Whitechapel and shot him through the head with his Luger pistol. Jack “the hat” McVitie, a vicious thug himself, was stabbed repeatedly in the face, chest and stomach, by Reg, as part of a violent struggle at a party in Evering Road Stoke Newington.

The Kray twins were convicted of murder in 1969 and sentenced to a minimum of 30 years They believed that their life sentence was unjust and that after many years in custody they had fulfilled their duty to society and in their own words...”Ron and I killed one man each. Both of the men we killed were violent men, gangsters, One by his own admission, had already killed another man. The other had shot and wounded at least one man and would almost certainly have killed another- given the time and the chance he would have killed me. For that we have spent more than twenty years in captivity, often treated worse than wild animals.”

Ron and Reg Our Story allows the reader to feel part of an interview that is taking place between the author and the interviewees. It is a style of writing that works very well and presents the coherent facts in an easy to understand and intelligent manner. It gives a good insight into gangland in 60’s London and asks important questions about our judicial system.

Ron Kray passed away in Broadmoor Hospital in 1995. Reg was finally released on compassionate grounds in 2000 before losing his battle with cancer in October of that year.

Interesting stuff for those who want to hear the story from the words of the gangsters themselves.

Reg and Ron Kray were a couple of notorious gangsters of the London underworld in the 1960’s, even in a way inspiring a rather amusing Monty Python comedy skit. They were hardly Teflon coated, going down on a number of occasions for various things however always dodging long sentences or getting off for some of the things they seemingly obviously did (but which could not be proven). Hence when they were actually caught and done the British legal system seems to have decided to take particular revenge, nailing them for 30 years each.

This book is interesting because it is basically all in their own words. There is no editorial chapters beyond the journalist who put it all together – Fred Dinenage – explaining how it all came about. The book paints a picture of the kind of environment that creates such people and such social set ups that allow such people to flourish (such as the East End cone of silence that descends when crimes are committed and a generic community view of not speaking to the police).

The book does an excellent job of allowing the Kray brothers to tell their story, to speak of their friendships and their enemies, their thoughts on the business they were in and their own personal rules of conduct. They also get to speak of their father and especially their mother. There are a number of photographs in the book that show the brothers in different settings, their mother and also there are photographs of them in several social settings, sometimes with prominent boxers or other celebrities. Indeed the gambling dens of the Kray brothers certainly seem to have been popular with a range of Londons more well to do denizens.

Where the book falls down is its lack of really getting into the nitty gritty about some of the criminal activities. We are told about the small fortunes passing through their gangs hands and into their coffers – of doctors being on the payroll and the like – yet strangely little detail. Now of course this would be partly to prevent them being prosecuted for additional crimes and also to avoid starting trouble for other associates of theirs that were on the outside (both brothers were still in gaol in 1988 when this book was originally released (there is a 2015 introduction on my reprint version that adds a tiny bit to the story). So for those wanting this kind of unvarnished detail they will have to go to other books.

It should also be noted that given this book was first released in 1988 it doesn't really add anything to the tale after that point. Though they were just kept in gaol, one finally being released on compassionate grounds due to illness several months before his death.

All up the book is highly worthy as an insight into the minds of the sorts of people who could rule sections of London, the sorts of people from humble beginnings that could become celebrity criminals. It certainly would be a great book to read for anyone who finds true crime works to their taste as it spends less time on the gore and a lot of time on the views and morals of the Kray brothers and the work comes across as very much being in their own words.

About the Author

Stan Gibilisco is a technical writer and editor with more than 30 years of literary experience. He has authored or co-authored more than 50 nonfiction books in the fields of electronics, general science, mathematics, and computing. One of his books, the McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Personal Computing (McGraw-Hill, 1995), was named as a “Best Reference of 1996” by the ALA. Very pleased with the format.

I found the format of the book great for learning. I am a mechanical engineer who wants to get a better grasp of electronics. Admittedly, I'm only through chapter 16 at the time of this review, however, I've learned a lot already. He presents the material in a very straight-forward way and doesn't attempt to cover too much material before he provides a quiz. I'm looking forward to completing the book. I may consider, after that, buying the book designed for experiments. But if the rest of the book is as good as it has been so far, I will be very pleased. Perhaps, I'm "dumber" than the last reviewer, but I found the presentation level to be perfect for me. I highly recommend the book!

not for everyone but good book

The cover is a bit misleading, thats why I gave it a four. This book is a question and answer type of book. Its like a math work book. If your looking to build projects this is not the book. I know the cover gives that impression, but that is not covered. The book is about the science/math behind electricity/electronics. I first learned electronics by getting a book where you actually build small projects, I eventually go the hang of building little projects and wanted to learn the science behind what I was doing in a q and A format and this book fit the bill since I was not lloking for a text book. Its not a text type book, so if you like things explained in detail, this is not the book. Over all not a bad book, but it may not be the best book for every one.

Very Dissapointed

I do not understand why people think this book is great.
It is NOT a book for beginners to learn electronics in any way. It is more like a basic encyclopedia that gives you a brief description of a million topics.
The book does cover an incredible number of areas, most are NOT beginner subjects at all, but it only has one brief paragraph to cover a subject that should be a whole chapter.
The information given on most subjects is so brief, like an overview, that you will not understand the subject properly. The chapter covering linear and digital integrated circuits is only 8 pages! 8 pages for all linear and digital IC's! you don't learn anything.
For me, the few times they actually do try to really explain something, they do so in a confusing and complicated way, I would have no clue what they were trying to say if I hadn't read 2 other books.
When you get the book it is nice and big so you think it is going to be great, but most chapters are 6-8 pages and then 4 pages of quiz and the last 100 pages are quiz and index so only about 60% of the book is subject matter. The quizes are valuable for the most part.
For a hobbyist I think only the first half of the book is even relevant.
I am disappointed, I wanted to learn more about semiconductors, transistors, and ICs but this just had very little to offer here. It just tries to be to broad.
Like I said, for a reference book with basic info on a lot of subjects that other books do not cover, this is fine.
As a first book for "Teaching yourself Electronics"... Forget it. The first part starts out good but as soon as you get to semiconductors it changes to very short theory paragraphs and you don't learn enough to be useful. Every other book I have read on basic electronics is better. Sorry
